World Heritage Centre at Mayapur in West Bengal

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) plans to set up a World Heritage Centre  at Mayapur in Nadia district, West Bengal. The centre will house 'spiritual camps' of 45 countries. The Temple of Vedic Planetarium will be the first part of the World Heritage Centre. It will have one of the biggest domes in the world and is expected to be inaugurated in 2022. The global headquarters of ISKCON is at Mayapur.

92 year-old Indian Priest Receives Highest Civilian Award of France

Father Francois Laborde, an Indian priest of French origin, was conferred the Légion d'Honneur (Legion of Honour) on February 6, 2019. Father Laborde had set up Howrah South Point, an organisation for the development of specially-abled children, and the deprived sections of the society. The highest civilian award of France was given to him in recognition of his work. He is the third person from West Bengal to be entitled with the Legion of Honour, after film maestro Satyajit Ray and actor Soumitra Chatterjee.

The Second Edition of India Heritage Walk Festival (IHWF) 2019 with UNESCO

The second edition of Sahapedia’s India Heritage Walk Festival (IHWF) kicked off on February 2, 2019. In partnership with UNESCO, it will be a series of multi-city heritage walks for people with special needs and underprivileged children. A one-of-its-kind month-long festival covering 37 cities the festival will take place from February 2 to 28, 2019. The first edition of the festival received the PATA Gold Awards 2018 in Heritage and Culture.

Guru Padmasambhava Statue at Jirang Unveiled

The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, unveiled a statue of Guru Padmasambhava in Odisha on February 7, 2019. The 19-foot-high statue is a tribute to the founder of Tibetan Buddhism and is at Jirang in Gajapati district of Berhampur, Odisha. Guru Padmasambhava is also known as second Buddha. He was born and brought up in Odisha before he left for Tibet. The stone statue weighs 29 tonnes and is placed in the middle of ‘Padma Sarovar’, a large tank near Padmasambhava Mahavihara, which is the largest Buddhist monastery in eastern India.

India Pavilion Inaugurated at Berlin International Film Festival 2019

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry, is participating in the Berlin International Film Festival 2019. The 69th annual affair is being held from February 7 to 17, 2019 at Berlin in Germany. The India Pavilion at the festival was inaugurated by Matthijis Wouter Knol, Director European Film Market (EFM).

International Conference to Mark 50 years of India-Bhutan Relationship

To mark 50 years of diplomatic ties between India and Bhutan, a two-day international conference was held in New Delhi. The conference, on 8th-century Himalayan sage Guru Padmasambhava, was titled ‘Life and Legacy of Guru Padmasambhava’. It was held at the India International Centre on January 29-30, 2019.

Assam Republic Day Journalism Award 2019

The Assam government has conferred the Republic Day Journalism Award 2019 upon veteran journalist Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty. He is the former editor of Dainik Asom, Dainik Janambhumi and Ajir Batori group of newspaper; and has been honoured for his lifelong contribution to journalism in the state.

Tamil Nadu Gets Best State Award under Swasth Bharat Yatra

Tamil Nadu got the Best State Award for active participation in the Swasth Bharat Yatra. This was a pan-India cyclothon, aimed at promoting the concept of ‘eating right for a healthy life’. The movement was to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi from October 2018 to January 2019 and was organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
