Work to Begin on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

On August 24, 2018, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport, Shipping and Highways, announced that the construction of the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway will commence in December 2018 by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It will be ready for use by 2021.

Governors Appointed in 7 States

President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Governors for Bihar, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Tripura on August 21, 2018. Governor Satya Pal Malik, was reshuffled from Bihar to Jammu and Kashmir, replacing N.N. Vohra, and senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon was appointed as the Governor of Bihar.

Supreme Court Ruling over NOTA Option in Rajya Sabha Elections

The Supreme Court ruled that the ‘None of The Above’ (NOTA) option will not be applicable for voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. The ruling was made by a bench of Justices comprising CJI Dipak Misra, Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud on August 21, 2018.

111 Utility Helicopters for the Indian Navy

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has approved the procurement of 111 utility helicopters for the Indian Navy at the cost of over Rs 21,000 Crore. DAC is the Union Defence Ministry’s top decision making body on capital procurement for Army, Navy and Air Force.
