President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir

The state of Jammu and Kashmir has come under the President's rule since December 20, 2018. The Governor's rule expired on December 19, 2018. The President's rule was imposed after a report by the Governor, Satya Pal Malik. President Ram Nath Kovind will issue a proclamation declaring that the powers of the legislature of the state shall be exercisable by or under the authority of the Parliament. The President’s rule can be extended by another six months, in case elections are not declared.

 

Onion Farmers in Maharashtra to get Financial Relief

The Maharashtra government announced Rs. 150 crore as relief to onion farmers on December 20, 2018. It comprises of an ex-gratia payment of Rs 200 per quintal rate for onions sold between November 1 to December 15, 2018. This will be applicable to a total of 75 lakh metric tons of onions.

 

Literacy Survey in Tripura

The government of the state of Tripura will be conducting a fresh survey on the literacy rate in the state. The last survey, conducted in 2014, recorded a literacy rate of 95% in the state. It was conducted by the Indian Statistical Institute.

 

Consumer Protection Bill Passed in Lok Sabha

The lower house passed the Consumer Protection Bill 2018 on December 20, 2018. It replaces the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The objective of the Bill is ‘‘to provide for the protection of the interests of consumers and for the said purpose, to establish authorities for timely and effective administration and settlement of consumers’ disputes.’’

 

Delhi-UP Towns to get First AC Local Train

Cities of Uttar Pradesh within 200-300 km from Delhi will get AC local trains from February 2019. This will be catered by the MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) train. Meanwhile, the second air-conditioned 12-coach local train for the Mumbai suburban railways will be flagged off by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) by December 31, 2018.

 

Rs. 8037.87 crore Grant for Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has nodded a grant of Rs. 8037.87 crore for development in Bengaluru under the Chief Minister’s Nava Bengaluru Scheme. The money will be released over the next three years. The works will be carried out by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

 

57th Goa Liberation Day

 

Goa celebrated its 57th Liberation Day on December 19, 2018. Goa was liberated on the day, after 450 years of Portuguese rule, in 1961.
