Delhi’s Signature Bridge Opens

14 years after being conceptualised, the Signature Bridge across the river Yamuna was inaugurated on November 4, 2018. Connecting Wazirabad to the city, it reduces time of travel between north and northeast Delhi by 35 minutes. It is the first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge in India.

Supreme Court gets 4 new Judges

President Ram Nath Kovind issued a notice appointing 4 new judges of Supreme Court on November 1, 2018. The judges took their oath of office administered by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on November 2, 2018. The 4 new judges are Hemant Gupta who was the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, R. Subhash Reddy who was the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, M.R. Shah who was the incumbent Chief Justice of Patna High Court; and Ajay Rastogi who was the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court.

National Unity Day Observed

The 143rd birth anniversary of the ‘Iron Man of India’, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was observed as the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in India on October 31, 2018. The day was commemorated with the unveiling of Sardar Patel’s statue at Kevadiya in Narmada District of Gujarat, by PM Narendra Modi. It is the world’s tallest statue with a height of 182 metres and is called the Statue of Unity.

Ayodhya Dispute Hearing Deferred till 2019

A three judge bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justices S.K. Kaul and K.M. Joseph postponed the hearing of pleas on the Ayodhya verdict on October 29, 2018. SC will fix the date for the hearing in January 2019.

Seoul Peace Prize for Prime Minister

PM Narendra Modi was awarded Seoul Peace Prize 2018 by the Seoul Peace Prize Committee on October 24, 2018. The committee recognised his contribution towards regional and global peace. He was also credited for introducing ‘Modinomics’ for the reduction of the economic disparity in India. The PM is the 14th recipient of this award.

‘Made in India’ Engineless Train to be Unveiled

The first ever engineless train made in India, Train 18, will hit the tracks on October 29, 2018. It will be tested for 3-4 days before being handed over to Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

Madras High Court Rules Over Disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs

The Madras High Court upheld the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs who have been loyal to rebel T.T.V. Dinakaran, on October 25, 2018. Dinakaran has formed his own new party, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).

CBI Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana were stripped of their positions by the Union Government at midnight on October 23, 2018. The decision was reached after the two started hurling bribery allegations at each other.

Four-Member Group of Ministers to Look into Sexual Harassment of Women

A four-member Group of Ministers (GoM) was formed by the Union Government on October 24, 2018. Headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, it comprises of Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi.

Police Commemoration Day 2018

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Museum of National Police Memorial on Police Commemoration Day on October 21, 2018. He also and paid homage to the martyrs by laying a wreath at the memorial. The PM announced an annual award in the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose to recognise bravery and courage in saving lives in a disaster.
