Sunil Arora takes charge as the New Chief Election Commissioner

Sunil Arora took charge as the 23rd Chief Election Commissioner on December 2, 2018. He will be in office till October 2021. He is succeeded by O.P. Rawat.

Himachal Pradesh now has a Single Emergency Number

Himachal Pradesh launched the first single emergency number in India on November 28, 2018. The number ‘112’ will connect the caller to action help lines through an Emergency Response Centre (ERC).

Death Penalty Withheld by Supreme Court while Justice Kurian Joseph Differs

The apex court gave the verdict of life imprisonment to an accused for murdering three people instead of a death penalty, on November 28, 2018. The verdict was passed by a three-judge bench of Justices Kurian Joseph, Deepak Gupta and Hemant Gupta wherein Justice Kurian Joseph feels that capital punishment can prove to be an effective deterrent.

Security Restrictions for Border Area Developments Revised

The Defence Ministry issued fresh guidelines for developmental work in border areas on November 27, 2018. The earlier restrictions were not helpful for small works in the border areas. The new guidelines will facilitate developmental work carried out by the central or state government’s statutory bodies in these areas.

 Isolated Sentinel Island in the News

The tribal people of the Sentinel Island recently killed and buried an American missionary John Allen Chau who visited the island to spread the message of love. The island is officially a part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands but is a sovereign entity as the people  govern themselves and live according to their own rules. The tribals are unwelcoming to outsiders, attacking anyone nearing the island, with bows and arrows.

PAiSA Portal Lanched

The Portal for Affordable Credit and Interest Subvention Access (PAiSA) was launched by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on November 26, 2018. This is a centralised electronic platform for quicker processing of loans under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).

Foundation Stone Laid for the Dera Baba Nanak – Kartarpur Sahib Corridor

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu laid the foundation stone for the construction of Dera Baba Nanak – Kartarpur Sahib Road Corridor on November 26, 2018. This was done on the Indian side at Mann village in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. The corridor will facilitate travels to the holy site of Gurudwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan by Indian Sikh pilgrims.

10th Anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks

As India marked the 10th anniversary of the infamous Taj attack, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Pakistan to take action against those responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks and offered a reward of USD 5 million under Rewards for Justice programme for information on the perpetrators.
