India, Germany Focus on Sustainable Urban Development

The two countries signed an agreement on financial and technical cooperation to focus on sustainable urban development and renewable energy on August 1. Germany had pledged nearly Rs.8500 crore for development cooperation with India in December 2017.

Imran Khan may be the new Pakistani Prime Minister

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf won 116 National Assembly seats out of 270 contested parliamentary constituencies emerging as the single largest party after the Pakistan Elections 2018. If PTI is able to form the government with the support of smaller parties and independents, Imran Khan may be sworn in as the new Prime Minister on August 14.

India, China to Maintain Border Tranquility

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj completed a successful visit to Kazakhstan with a bilateral meeting with her Kazakh External Affairs counterpart in which she expressed India's interest to partner with Kazakhstan on several fronts.  She is now in Kyrgyzstan, on the second leg of her 3 Central Asian Nations' visit.

US Aid to Pakistan Capped at $150 Million

The United States Congress has capped its security-related aid to Pakistan to $150 million. In the National Defense Authorisation Act-2019 (NDAA-19) which was passed on August 1, the figure is lower than the previous figure of more than $ 1 billion to $750 million per year. 

French Parliament Signs into Law, Controversial Bill

France's parliament signed into law an asylum and immigration bill on August 1, to accelerate asylum procedures by cutting the maximum processing time to 90 days from 120 currently, after entering France. The text was adopted on a final reading by 100 votes in favour to 25 against with 11 abstentions.

US Elevates India to STA-1 Country Status

The United States has elevated India's status to a Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 (STA-1) country from STA-2, thereby granting India the same access as NATO allies, Australia, Japan and South Korea. The STA-1 status comprises of 36 countries as of now.
