National Sports University Bill 2018 passed in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha passed The National Sports University Bill 2018 on August 3 under which the National Sports University will be headquartered in Manipur. Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore introduced the Bill in Lok Sabha on July 23. The functioning of the University will be under the central government’s purview.

At the 44th annual gathering of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development in Colombo, India got elected against Iran as the President on August 3 for a period of 2 years. The Sri Lankan Minister of Finance and Mass Media, Mangala Samarweera inaugurated the 3 day gathering.

NHAI signs MoU for Long Term Unsecured Loan of Rs. 25000 Crore with SBI

The MoU signed on August 3, for 10 years with 3 years of moratorium on repayments is a public sector bank’s highest long term unsecured loan to any entity.

New Promotion Policy for Railway Sportspersons

A new policy for promotion of railway sportspersons has been approved by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Railways. The policy states that all who have won a position or medal at the Olympics and all those along with coaches who have been awarded the Padma Shri will be promoted as officers.

Revamping of Judicial Infrastructure

On August 2, the Supreme Court issued directions for the revamping of the judicial infrastructure and the quality of justice administration all over the country. This included having a conducive atmosphere for children and vulnerable witnesses.

Constitution (123rd Amendment) Bill passed

The Lok Sabha passed the Bill that asks for constitutional status for the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) on August 2. It was passed with over two-third majority with 406 members present voting in favour of the Bill.

Logo and Tagline for ‘Geographical Indication’ Certified Products

The tricolour logo and tagline “Invaluable Treasures of Incredible India” for GI certified products was launched on August 2 by the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu. In a contest that saw 918 entries for tagline and 383 entries for logo, the winners, Adri Chatterjee for logo and Akancha Tripathi for tagline were awarded an amount of Rs 50000 each.

LIC to get Acquisition of Controlling Stake IDBI Bank

The Union Cabinet approved the acquisition of controlling stake in IDBI Bank by LIC on August 1. The government shareholding in IDBI Bank is also to be reduced to below 50%.

‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’ to Reimburse CGST and IGST on Food Distributed

Launched by the Union Ministry of Culture on August 1, the scheme will compensate CGST and IGST to religious and charitable institutions that provide free food in the form of prasad, langar or bhandara to people without any discrimination.

Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 passed

On July 30, Lok Sabha passed the bill to increase the minimum punishment for rape of women to 10 years and minimum punishment for rape of girls below 12 years to 20 years, extendable to life imprisonment or death.

Assam NRC Not to be the Basis of any Action

In a ruling by the Supreme Court, it was declared that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prepared for State of Assam was only a draft, and hence it cannot be the basis of any action by any authority against anyone, on July 31. As per the final draft published on July 30, approximately forty lakh people have been excluded from the list.
