Hindi now Official in Abu Dhabi Courts

In a landmark decision, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has made Hindi the third official language of the city’s courts. Arabic and English being the primary and secondary languages. The intention is to help Hindi speaking people learn about litigation procedures, their rights and duties without a language barrier. The Indian community in the UAE constitutes 30 per cent of the total population at 2.6 million, and is the largest expatriate community in the country.

 

Macedonia, the New Member of NATO

NATO members signed the accession protocol for Macedonia to become the 30th member of the US-led alliance on February 6, 2019. The historic agreement was signed between Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov and the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg. The official new name of the country now is, Republic of North Macedonia.

 

The Fifth India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Committee Meeting in New Delhi

The 5th India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Committee Meeting was held in New Delhi on February 8, 2019. It was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Foreign Affairs Minister of Bangladesh Dr A. K. Abdul Momen. The last Joint Consultative Committee Meeting between the two countries was held in October 2017 at Dhaka.

 

Thailand Names Siamese Fighting Fish, National Aquatic Animal

The Siamese fighting fish also known as betta fish, is popular in home aquariums for its shimmering body and colourful fin plumage. The fighting fish was declared the national aquatic animal on February 5, 2019. Thailand's official national animal is the elephant.

 

Women's Global Development and Prosperity Initiative (W-GDP) Led by Ivanka Trump

 

President Trump signed a presidential memorandum launching a landmark effort on behalf of women worldwide on February 7, 2019. The government-wide project was closely crafted and conceived by Senior Adviser Ivanka Trump. The project is effort aimed at helping 50 million women in the developing world get ahead economically over the next six years.

India and Algeria Expand Alliance with Possible Investments in Energy Sector

President Ram Nath Kovind invited Algeria to consider investments in oil reserves, refineries and LNG terminals in India. Foreign Minister of Algeria, Abdelkader Messahel, called on the President on January 31, 2019. Subsequently, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met with the Algerian Foreign Minister. Their meeting included talks on cooperation in sectors such as trade & investment, space, defence, hydrocarbon resources, mining, fertilizers, as well as regional & global challenges. India and Algeria are already working together in space, defence and civil nuclear energy areas.

 

US-Russia Suspend Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that US ends its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty effective February 2, 2019. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on the same day that Russia also suspends its participation. US will withdraw from the treaty in six months. The INF is a Nuclear disarmament agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union with an unlimited duration. It was signed in December 1987 by US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

 

US Senator Cory Booker to run for 2020 Presidential Election

US Senator Cory Booker will be seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2020 presidential election. The 49 year-old second-term Senator from New Jersey has become the latest Democrat and the fourth U.S. Senator to announce a presidential bid.

 

Indian-origin US Senator Kamala Harris to run for 2020 Presidential Election

54-year-old US Senator Kamala Harris, of Indian-origin was elected to the Senate in 2016. She announced her run for the presidency in January. She has been voted on top of the list of Democratic leaders aspiring to defeat Trump in the 2020 Presidential election.

 

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the World's Busiest Airport

The Dubai International Airport (DXB) overtook London's Heathrow Airport as the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic in 2014. It has again been named as the world's busiest airport for international passengers for the fifth consecutive year. Indian travellers emerged as the largest source of traffic for the airport with a record footfall of over 89 million. Dubai international airport opened for civil aviation in July 1937.

 

First Ever Female Hindu Civil Judge in Pakistan

 

Suman Kumari has become the first Hindu woman ever, to have been appointed as a civil judge in Pakistan. She is from Qambar-Shahdadkot and will serve in her native district.
