Sanctions Imposed on Pakistan
10 nations including Pakistan have been imposed with sanctions under a US law. As per the law, countries refusing to take back deportees and people overstaying their visa, will be denied American visas. US warned Pakistan that it may withhold visas of Pakistanis beginning from its senior officials.
Qatar’s Exit Visa System to End
According to the International Labour Organization of the UN, Qatar will end its exit visa system for all foreign workers by the end of 2019. The announcement was made on April 26, 2019. In September 2018, Qatar scrapped the “kafala” system which required foreign workers to obtain permission from their employers to leave the country.
71st World Press Freedom Hero Award
The assistant editor and columnist at Pakistani daily ‘Dawn’, Cyril Almeida was named as the recipient of the 71st World Press Freedom Hero award by the International Press Institute (IPI) on April 24, 2019.
India to Stop Oil Imports from Iran
The Trump administration made the decision to not renew the waiver that let countries like India buy Iranian oil without facing US sanctions on April 22, 2019. According to Indian officials, the decision was taken to stop importing crude oil from Iran on April 23, 2019.
India Advocates for Africa at UNSC
India stressed for Africa to be represented among the ranks of the permanent members of the UN Security Council. 55 African nations are the single largest group at the UN making up more than a quarter of its membership and yet do not have a permanent member on the Council.
