    The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore launched the National Youth Parliament Festival 2019. This was done at a function in New Delhi on January 12, 2019.     Law Commission in Jammu and Kashmir

    The J&K administration has set up a law commission for a term of three years. The founding chairperson of the commission is Justice (Retd) M.K. Hanjura. The commission will identity redundant and obsolete laws that can be repealed and suggest measures for quick redress of public grievances.

    Metro Rail Projects Approved by Karnataka State Cabinet

    The Karnataka State Cabinet has approved three metro rail projects and a feasibility report by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) on the suburban railway project. The four suburban railway corridors were approved at an estimated cost of Rs. 23,093 crore.

    Karnataka MP Pratap Simha has requested Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to review the existing recruitment policy of the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). Analysts say that China’s lunar probe is part of its Made in China-2025 project which will focus on advanced technology, including space applications.

    China Successfully Tests Most Powerful Non-Nuclear Weapon

    China successfully tested its most powerful non-nuclear weapon. The media is calling it the Chinese version of the Mother of All Bombs, in comparison to an American one used in Afghanistan in 2017. The bomb is five to six metres long (16 to 20 feet), but weighs less than the American version.

    RBI asked to Legalise New Indian Currency in Nepal

    The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has written a letter to RBI to make Indian currency of Rs.200, Rs.500 and Rs.2,000 legal in Nepal. The higher denomination Indian notes had to be banned in Nepal since RBI did not allow their circulation. The RBI has only allowed the circulation of Indian currency notes of Rs.100 and less in Nepal.

    NGT fines Meghalaya Government

    The National Green Tribunal has fined Meghalaya government with an amount of Rs. 100 crore for its failure to curb illegal coal mining in the state. The action comes after a high-level committee submitted an adverse report to a bench headed by NGT chairperson AK Goel. According to the report, a majority of the mines in the state are operating without a lease or license. Meghalaya government has admitted that a large number of mines are operating illegally.

     

    A Solar Power Grid of 7.5 GW for Jammu & Kashmir

    The Solar Energy Corporation of India has invited bids from solar power developers to construct 7.5 GW grid connected projects in Leh and Kargil Districts of Jammu & Kashmir. 2.5 GW will be constructed in Kargil and 5 GW in Leh. This tender is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of building 100 gigawatts of solar capacity in the country by 2022.

     

    Global Healthcare Summit 2019 will be in Hyderabad

    Organized in partnership with the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, the 13th edition of the Global Healthcare Summit 2019 will be held in Hyderabad from July 21 to 24, 2019. The summit will have an international research competition for which the American Association of Physicians with Indian Origin (AAPI) will be working in collaboration with a leading academic medical college in Hyderabad.

    As per the information shared by the Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Parshottam Rupala, the Government had launched a Global Environment Facility (GEF) assisted project during September 2018. The project, “Green – Ag: Transforming Indian Agriculture for global environmental benefits and the conservation of critical biodiversity and forest landscapes” is in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The project aims to mainstream biodiversity, climate change, and sustainable land management objectives and practices into Indian agriculture.

    The air quality in Mumbai is in the poor category, after being in the very poor category. It is said that the air quality index (AQI) will stay in the poor to very poor categories for around a month. The city’s average Air Quality Index stood at 284 (PM 2.5).

    Indian Cricketer Rishabh Pant Makes History

    Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant became the country's first keeper to complete twenty catches in a Test series on December 30, 2018. Pant broke the records of former cricketers Naren Tamhane and Syed Kirmani who had nineteen dismissals in 1954-55 and 1979-80 respectively. Australia's Brad Haddin holds the record for the most catches (29) in a Test series.

    Jasprit Bumrah, Highest Wicket Taker in 2018

    The Indian fast bowler became the highest wicket-taker in international cricket in 2018. With 78 wickets in 2018, he has overtaken South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada who was at 77 wickets. Bumrah took 48 wickets in Tests, 22 in ODIs and 8 in T20Is in 2018.

    Lingappa Narayana Swamy, Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court

    Following the elevation of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari to the Supreme Court, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Justice L.N. Swamy as the Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. This was done under Article 223 of the Constitution. Justice Swamy is presently the senior most Judge of the Karnataka High Court.

     

    Mughalsarai Tehsil to be Renamed

    The proposal to rename the Mughalsarai tehsil has been approved by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet. It will be named after the co-founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. The Yogi Adityanath government has also renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj and Faizabad district as Ayodhya district.

     

    Remote ATC Tower System to be Tested

    Airports Authority of India (AAI) will run a pilot project to do away with manned towers for providing Air Traffic Control (ATC) services. A first of its kind, this system will be tested at Gujarat’s Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar airports.

     

    New Development and Building Rules in Tamil Nadu

     

    The Tamil Nadu State cabinet cleared the Combined Development Regulation and Building Rules. These rules include simplified application forms for planning permission, standardization of development rules and elimination of the scope for discretion on the part of planning authorities.

    Indra Nooyi, Prospective Candidate to Head the World Bank

    The White House is considering Indra Nooyi among other candidates to head the World Bank. The current president Jim Yong Kim will be quitting his post in February 2019.

     

    Iran to Launch Two Domestic Satellites

     

    Iran is planning to launch two satellites into orbit, made domestically. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has said that these satellites will gather information on its environment. The satellite named Payam will orbit the earth at 600 kilometres above its surface and the second satellite Doosti will orbit at an altitude of 250 kilometres with a focus on agriculture. Both the satellites have been successfully tested and are ready for launch.

    India Born, Dr. Rattan Lal to Receive 2019 Japan Prize

    India born Dr. Rattan Lal is a Distinguished University Professor of Soil Science at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  He will be honoured with the 2019 Japan Prize in the field of “Biological Production, Ecology”. Dr. Lal was listed among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds in 2012 and also among the top one per cent of all researchers in agriculture. The Japan Prize Foundation recognised two scientists this year for original and outstanding achievements. Dr Yoshio Okamoto, Professor Emeritus at Nagoya University in Nagoya, Japan will also be honoured in the field of “Materials and Production”.

     

    Cotton Sprouts on Moon

    The Chinese space agency said that a cotton seedling had sprouted on the moon but been left to die. China’s lunar lander is in a freezing night-time nap that will last for two earth weeks. The seed germinated inside a special canister aboard the Chang’e-4 probe which operated for over 212 hours and was shut down as planned.

     

    Bangalore Company to Launch AI Chatbots

    The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) is preparing to launch Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbots. These will be dealing with calls and messages that its multiple helplines receive when there are power cuts. The chatbots will be expected to work in multiple interfaces like WhatsApp, social media, and website.

     

    Evidence of Methane Rainfall on Saturn's Largest Moon

    Scientists have found evidence of methane rainfall on the north pole of the largest moon of Saturn. The evidence was gathered using data from the Cassini spacecraft. This is the first indication of the start of a summer season in Titan’s northern hemisphere. The Cassini mission launched in October 1997, is a collaboration between NASA, Europe agency and Italian space agency.

    Rs.6,084 crore have been allotted by the Centre  to the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREGA/MGNREGA) scheme for the next three months. NREGA has exhausted 99% of its annual allocation three months ahead of time.

     

    India to Grow Crops for UAE and Saudi Arabia

    Union Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced that the UAE and Saudi Arabia have decided to address their food security concerns with India's help. For the first time, agriculture along with horticulture, dairy, plantation, and fisheries will be identified under India’s export policy. The crops will be grown keeping in mind both markets. The concept has been accepted by both governments.

     

    MoU Between Adani Group and German Company

    The largest chemical producer in the world BASF SE (BASF) is a German chemical company. It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Adani Group to invest Rs. 16,000 crore in the acrylics value chain. This deal is BASF’s largest investment in India to date.

He achieved this feat in the quarter-final match for Vidarbha against Uttarakhand in Nagpur. Jaffer also went past the 200-run mark in Ranji Trophy for the ninth time with his 206.
