MBA has been a priority for many students pursuing business studies since the past few years to give their career a much-needed boost. Aspirants are dodging their jobs and inclining towards the Managerial positions or looking to set up their enterprise. Acknowledging the career elevation that an MBA can provide has been a paramount factor in the increasing importance of the field. 

Since MBA notifications suggest that applications for the entrance exams are about to begin in a month or two, it’s of prime importance to understand the pattern of MBA exam and critically analyze the ways to get through the considerably hard exam. Furthermore, CAT is the most commonly known MBA exam in India. Having said that, it isn’t the only exam which you can take to secure a seat in prestigious institutions like IIMs, or other significant business schools.

CAT (Common Admission Test)

It’s the most sought after the exam by MBA aspirants, which admits students to 20 IIMs and also to more than 100 Business schools in India that regard the score of the CAT examination.


What features in the CAT examination?

The online exam is divided into three categories of 

  • Quantitative Ability 
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning


Eligibility criterion- 

If one is a graduate, a minimum of 50% is desirable for unreserved category and a minimum of 45% for the reserved ones. Final year students, who are awaiting the result, can also apply for the exam which is generally held around November or December.

MAT (Management Aptitude Test)

The MAT examination is organized by the All India Management Association (AIMA) in both the offline and online modes. The test score is accepted by 300 and more Business Institutions for screening MBA aspirants. 


What features in the MAT test?

The two and a half hours long exam features five sections as per the MBA exam pattern, namely,  

  • Language Comprehension
  • Mathematical Skills
  • Data Analysis, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
  • Indian and Global Environment


Eligibility criterion-

Any graduate can appear for the exam which is scheduled for four times in an academic year, in February, May, September, December. 


XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test)

Organized by the Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI), this MBA entrance exam has recently adopted the online mode. Considered as the second toughest MBA entrance in India, it prolongs for an exhaustive three and a half hours. 


What features in the XAT exam?

The exam is divided into two parts. Part one is conducted for two hours and twenty minutes and tests the 

  • Quantitative Ability
  • English Language and Logical Reasoning
  • Decision-Making Ability

Eligibility Criterion-  

Students holding any graduate degree can sit for the test. Also, the exam is open for those who are in the third year of their graduation. 


SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test) 

Symbiosis International University (SIU), Pune conducts the test for admission in its 15 Business Schools, generally in November. Students appearing for MBA exam 2019 must look out for this test as it provides numerous opportunities in terms of career up-gradation. 


What features in the test? 

The two-hour-long test is broken down into four sections, namely, 

  • General English
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • General Awareness
  • Logical and Analytical Reasoning

For each right answer, one mark is awarded and 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong attempt at answering the question. 


Eligibility criterion-

A graduation degree with 50% marks is desirable. Alongside this, students of final year can also take the test to secure a seat for the PG degree. 


CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) 

The CMAT exam, MBA entrance exam was earlier conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) from this year. This national level MBA entrance exam admits students in more than 1000 institutes across India. 


What features in the test?

The exam tests five major areas in accordance with the MBA exam pattern- 

  • Logical Reasoning
  • Language Comprehension
  • Quantitative Techniques
  • Data Interpretation
  • General Awareness

Where four marks are awarded for every correct answer, one mark is deducted for a wrong choice. 


Eligibility Criterion-  

The eligibility criterion is the same as that of CAT, with 50% marks for the unreserved category in graduation and 45% for the unreserved. MBA aspirants of the final year can also appear for the test.
