Not goofing up GK in CLAT
This article isn’t about motivating anyone. I really don’t feel like I am a motivator. Neither am I a
motivational speaker (well, I hate that job-title).
Nor is this article going to be about the career options that are available after Law and why you should appear for CLAT.
You may choose up to be a corporate lawyer, a journalist, work for an NGO or do something else.
Irrespective of the life choice you make, the one thing that is common to the aforementioned choices, is the fact that you’ve to work hard. Really hard!
And this post is going to be exactly about that. And also about how should one go about their preparation for GK.
The ability to work hard and the skill to take in disappointments and return to the battleground is
the most quintessential thing for your preparation for CLAT Exam.
You may be talented. You may have a photographic memory. You may be the best in your school.
But, if you don’t work hard, you will soon be no one.
Rahul Dravid was one of the greatest players to have played the game of cricket. The reason why Dravid was a great batsmen lay in the fact that he worked on preserving his talent, on honing his skills that would help him make it productive.
On the other hand, Michael Jordan, a highly talented Basketball player, was cut off from his team in the initial years by the coach because he wasn’t putting in much hard work. But, he soon became the hardest working basketball player and the rest is history.
Same is the case with each of us.
No matter who we are, howsoever talented we might be, if we don’t practice enough (working hard = practicing), we are surely going to fail on the match day.
And remember, its not just CLAT that you are aiming for.
Your life has not been reduced to clearing CLAT. It is more than that. And this is the main reason why you should work hard.
Regardless of the fact that whether you get a good college or not, if you have worked hard
towards CLAT Preparation, you will not regret that you could not clear the exam.
And believe me, it is really the effort that counts. You might not be able to make it to a National Law School, but a few years down the line, you will surely benefit from this habit of working hard.
One exam cannot determine your life, but the fact that you can work hard will surely do.
General Knowledge – Aiming for a good score
Remembering the number ‘1’ would help us be better at GK.
Learning from ‘1’ book would help in getting a good score in CLAT.
Going through that ‘1’ book numerous times is the ultimate key, instead of looking at numerous sources.
Reading that ‘1’ newspaper every day and ‘1’ current affairs magazine every month would suffice the preparation.
But how exactly would anyone remember so many things at once?
Well, you’re not supposed to remember everything… because no sane person can remember each and every word of Pearson [or Lucent], even in a lifetime.
So, how would one do it?
• Firstly, GK, as a subject for an objective paper is majorly about good guessing that involves
logical thinking. Logical guessing and not random guessing is the key. And, this logical guessing
comes only having an overview of all the topics. Thus, finishing the entire book once is a must.
The second ideal step is to attempt objective questions from that topic. Your rank is inversely
proportional to the number of questions you attempt. Thus attempt as many questions as possible.
• Secondly, you can only remember if you revise the parts again and again. Like Dravid, one has to
work on honing the skills that one has acquired.
• Thirdly, connect the two parts of GK. Never read the two in isolation. Also, a general trend of the
exam setters has been to involve those static GK questions in the exam, which are in a way
related to the current affairs. So, it is of utmost importance to connect the two threads. Generally
also, connect the previously read stuff to the present readings. For instance, if you read about a
particular state, try thinking about the capital of the state, the CM of the state. Think of the new
schemes that started in the state. Think of the major events that happened in that state. Just
connect the things. Make Mind Maps [Courtesy- Sherlock’s Mind Castle]
• Fourthly, do all the previous year questions to get a brief idea of the questions that are asked and
study in the same fashion and think from the perspective of an exam-setter.
• Fifthly, in this age of technology, using technology to our advantage is the key to success.Staying
curious would solve major GK Problems.Google the concept/word that you don’t understand. Or
try reading more about the event that you read about in the newspaper. Also, another constructive
use of technology can be to use your mobile phone to record yourself, while doing GK and
listening to it in your free time or while you’re commuting [Courtesy:- Dexter’s Laboratory Omelette du Fromage].
• In addition to the LawPrep Tutorials modules, the following CLAT Preparation books are necessary:-
Books – Either Lucent or Pearson [Both are equally good]
Magazines- News and Events [Very handy for revision]
Websites- Either GK Today or Jagran Josh [Both are equally good]
Newspapers- Either Hindu or The Indian Express [Notwithstanding what people say, Hindu is not
the only newspaper as you don’t have to appear for Civils]
Also Read : Best Books for CLAT 2022
Most importantly, just follow ‘1’ source of information and revise that many times, instead of
learning from 10 sources and not finishing even 1 of them.
Remember, poor scores in a mock doesn’t show that you can’t do it, rather it reflects that you didn’t practice much. And if you did, but still did not get the desired result, you won’t have anything to regret for.

How to Prepare for CLAT in 2 Months?
We're having a week in April and as the CLAT inch draws to a close, it's time to pull up your socks. There are a variety of strategies floating around the internet, here are a few things that you must remember before preparing your strategy for the upcoming exam. In this article, we discuss how you can prepare for CLAT in 2 months.
While these are the tips we recommend, remember that only you know where you stand with your preparation. So prioritize your needs and weaknesses accordingly!
1. Attempt as many mocks as you can
While many people often differ on their stance on mocks, we believe it is essential to attempt as many mocks as you can. Create an excel sheet and track your progress in the last few CLAT online mock tests. See which section you are missing. Analyze your score and work on your weaknesses.
2. Working on Your Weakness
Let us assume that you have realized that you are not doing well in CLAT Logical Reasoning. Pick up and solve all the previous few year's logical reasoning papers. Do at least 30-40 questions in a day and see if your scores are increasing or not.
Not seeing immediate progress with only two months left can be stressful but be patient with yourself. Classify logical reasoning questions into types: inference, logical fallacy, paradox and so on.
Find out which of these types is causing you trouble and work on it. It's not too late yet.
3. Modify
It is very important that you revise your notes, especially for GK. It may be true that your mocks make you feel like you are on track and don't need revision. But check your notes on important concepts. You have nothing to lose.
Remake your GK timeline and do the quiz yourself. Go through the quirky concepts of liability and postage rules!
4. Don't Compare
It's easy to get caught up in other people's fake scores. Maybe your best friend got 100+ and you still find yourself stuck at 80+, that's okay. Remember that your marks matter only in the actual exam, so keep practising on your weak areas.
5. Pick up the slack and put in the time
Remember that this is the last stage of your preparation. Don't miss the end goal now. Spend 6-8 hours a day, and choose multiple subjects. Revise, practise, and analyze. Prioritize cleats. Now don't slack off, you're almost at the finish line.

What to Do if You Couldn’t Clear the CLAT Exam?
The Common Law Admission Test CLAT is among the top undergraduate entrance exams for Law. It is attempted by students who dream to be part of some of the top law institutes in India, namely the National Law University (NLUs), NALSAR, and others. In 2017, CLAT recorded over 54,000 applicants fighting for just 2342 seats.
With such odds, it is only natural that many students fail to secure a seat for themselves, and as a result, feel clueless and get cold feet.
If you too are (or feel that you will be) one of them, worry not, because no success is complete without failure. Even though the path you were on resulted in a dead-end, there are still many alternate paths that can lead you to success.
So, here are a few options you can consider if you couldn’t clear the CLAT exam.
1. Pursue a 3-Year L.L.B Degree Instead
If you are under the impression that a 5-year degree is the one way to become a Lawyer, then hold on a minute! You can pursue Law after a normal UG degree also, through a 3-year L.L.B degree after completing your graduation. If you are not able to clear CLAT, then you can look at a few degree programs which can form a base for you to pursue law at a later stage.
For example, if you are keen on Law, then a B. A in Political Science can be a great introduction to law studies. The subject will help you understand how government policies are shaped, political systems and rules on which the country operates, as well as how countries operate globally.
Apart from this, you can look at any other degree program that interests you, and then follow it up with an L.L.B after graduation. Degrees such as B.B.A, B.Com, B.A Programme, B. A Psychology and B. English are some of the top choices for students who go this route.
2. Explore Related Professions
A professional program that helps you enter the world of legal studies, company policies and arbitration is Company Secretary (CS). From working as the chief adviser to the board of directors to advising the company on good governance practices, arbitration, negotiation, etc., they handle a gamut of activities. They are the in-house legal experts of the company and hold all knowledge about company law.
And the best part is, you don’t even need a Law degree to be a part of this field. Company Secretary is a professional program for which you need to clear the three stages, Foundation Program, Executive Program, and Professional Program, followed by a 1-year internship. You can pursue this after class 12th alongside any regular degree program, the most popular choice being B.Com.
Thus, while you will not be called a Lawyer, you would still be in a related domain and will get to practice Law. Another plus point of this option is that B. Com courses are Merit-based, thus, you don’t need to prepare for any additional entrance exams.
3. Look At Other Entrance Exams
While the CLAT 2022 exam is conducted for admission to 18 of the coveted National Law Schools, they are not the only renowned law institutions in India. There are other institutes such as O.P Jindal Global Law School, SRM University, Symbiosis International University, Banaras Hindu University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, etc. that offer good law programs.
The intake students through various other entrance exams such as LSAT (Law School Admission Test), SET (Symbiosis Entrance Test), BLAT (Banaras Hindu University Law Admission test), IPU CET LLB (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test). One of the NLUs, NLU Delhi conducts its separate entrance exam called the AILET, which you can consider too.
Many of these entrance exams are relatively easier than CLAT and their seat intake is also much higher as compared to the institutes under the CLAT exam. Additionally, applying for the LSAT entrance exam will also allow you to apply to foreign universities (note: their application process will be separate).
4. Go the Liberal Arts Way
Unsure about Law but still willing to explore it along with other options? Worry not, the Liberal Arts system of education is here to help you out.
While the traditional Indian education system could not think about combining different subjects into a single degree, the Liberal Arts system is slowly turning the tides by getting students to take an interdisciplinary approach. Unlike the specialization system of most Indian universities, Liberal Arts education allows you to study an array of subjects before choosing the one you wish to major in.
For example, at the Symbiosis School of Liberal Arts, Pune, you can combine Political Science as your major with Law as your minor subject. The course outline is such that it provides you with an understanding of both contemporary politics and concepts related to equality, obligations, rights, etc. It also covers topics related to family law, administrative law, criminal justice administration, etc. to apprise students of the fundamental concepts of law.
Similarly, at Shiv Nadar University you can take up a course in International Relations and Governance Studies that encompasses a wide variety of international concerns ranging from intellectual property regimes, cybersecurity governance, inequality, social policy, and global refugee politics.
Not just this, you can even take up subjects from other humanities disciplines and even those in Science and Commerce, if such is your interest.

Hence, don’t forget to brush up on topics of static GK, especially the ones that are connected to contemporary events. One such topic is the Indian Judiciary for CLAT:
The Indian Government has three main organs- the Legislature, the Executive, and the Judiciary. These three organs constitute a system of checks and balances, where they keep an eye on the activities of each other, while not interfering with their respective roles and duties.
The Indian Judicial System is a single integrated one, with the Supreme Court at the top, and is divided into several levels. The Supreme Court is also called the Apex Court and is the highest form of Judicial Authority in the country.

The age of retirement is 65 years. The decision of the Supreme Court is binding on all lower courts.
It also has the power to grant writs to protect the fundamental rights of the citizens of India. This is given in Article 32 of the Constitution. The Apex Court also has Appellate Jurisdiction, and can thus hear appeals resulting from lower court decisions. A High Court Judge can also be transferred to other courts, at the discretion of the CJI.
Important Information About District Courts
The next courts in the hierarchy are The District Courts.
These courts are present in each state and are responsible for administering justice at the district level. They are under the administrative control of the High Courts of that state and are presided over by a district judge, appointed by the state government. There are additional district judges as well, who have the same powers as the district judges.
These courts are under the appellate jurisdiction of the High Court. These subordinate courts usually follow a uniform system across the districts and are primarily divided into two- civil and criminal. Article 235 of the Indian Constitution gives the High Courts the power to control the district courts and courts thereto.
With CLAT just a few months away, start focusing on static topics and connect them to questions that can be asked.
For example, we’ve included static facts like the names of the first and current chief justices of India, the total number of high courts in India, the oldest high court, etc. These are questions that have a probability of being asked in exams because they are connected to the CLAT current affairs section and CLAT legal reasoning 2022.
Focus on such dynamic topics, and keep preparing.
