    Comparison between VITEEE and JEE

    Post Revision by

    Neha Gore

VITEEE (Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Exam) and JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) are the two most important entrance exams for the aspiring engineers. Students who want to pursue an engineering degree from a reputed college appear for these exams. The next hope of the candidates who are not able to crack IIT JEE is VITEEE. Both the exams are difficult and require ample hard work from the students to work on their basic concepts, thinking ability and problem-solving skills. VITEEE is comparatively easier to crack than IIT JEE with easy yet tricky questions that check your problem-solving skills. However, the ranking process in this exam is a huge confusion for the candidates.

Let’s compare both the exams to help you get a better understanding of your preparation strategies:

    Exam Highlights

    Particulars Exams
Exam Name Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering

    Entrance Examination (VITEEE)

For Paper 2 – Drawing section will be conducted as pen and paper based test

    Exam pattern

No matter which exam you are preparing for, having knowledge of the exam pattern is essential to give your preparation a right direction. Check IIT JEE and VITEEE exam patterns below:

2 drawing questions contain total 70 marks

Mode of Exam Computer-based (Pen-and-paper based for Drawing)

    Colleges covered

VITEEE is conducted for admission to Vellore Institute of Technology. The score of the exam can be used for admission in Vellore Institute of Technology’s Chennai and Vellore campuses.

On the other hand, IIT JEE is conducted to help candidates get admission in India’s top IITs, NITs and CFTis. Given below is the list of participating colleges in JEE:

S.No Type of Institute Number of Institutes
1 Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) 23
2 National Institute of Technology (NITs) 31
3 Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other GFTIs) 20
    Total 74

    Exam cutoff and difficulty level

The cutoff in both the exams works as a screening process for further admission rounds. The minimum marks and the cutoff in JEE Mains vary for the candidates from different categories. As NTA is the conducting body for JEE Main 2019, the cutoff will also be released by the National Testing Agency for January and April sessions.

As far as VITEEE cutoff is concerned, the college doesn’t release any official cutoff. However, the opening and the closing ranks released in the result are considered as cut off by the students.

The difficulty level of both the exams

There is no doubt that both the exams are difficult and demand for hard work from students. However, the difficulty level is different both in terms of the type of questions asked as well as the techniques required to solve them. JEE Mains checks students’ knowledge and understanding of the topics. VITEEE exam focuses on the thinking ability and problem-solving skills of the students. The exam includes more tricky questions where students don’t just need to put the formulas but need to think of the right application of the concepts.

    Approach by students

As far as the preparation approach for both the exams is concerned, it has to be the same in terms of covering the syllabus. You can prepare for both the exams by going through NCERT books and some additional study material provided by the coaching institutes or available online. But when it comes to the approach for attempting the final exam in the examination hall, you need to plan everything based on the exam you are sitting for. You need a systematic approach to clear the exams.

    For JEE

For instance, JEE will now be conducted twice a year for the same admission process. Best of the two scores will be used to make the list of selected students for the next round. Students can appear for either one or both the exams. Now, whether you want to appear for both the exams or only one, you need to plan everything accordingly.

    Preparation strategy for JEE

As the exam will now be conducted only in computer-based-format, you need to practice through online mock tests. Relying on just the pen-and-paper based practice tests in no more a choice if you seriously want to crack the exam. Further, you need to work on your speed and accuracy to score high marks in the final exam, which is possible only by regularly practicing sample papers and by solving previous year papers.

    Preparation strategy for VITEEE

As far as covering the syllabus is concerned, if you are preparing for JEE, you already cover most of VITEEE syllabus. You only need to work on the strategies and tricks to solve the questions as these are more of the application based rather than just putting the formula and reaching the answer. It is a common notion that VITEEE questions papers have a number of repeated questions from the same sections. So, you should focus on previous year papers and try to solve as many papers as you can. It will not only help you understand the question paper pattern but will also help you decide how to solve them to attempt maximum questions in the given time. Further, if you are lucky enough and get some questions you already solved, you can score some bonus marks.

Some Common Preparation Tips for VITEEE and JEE

    Clear your concepts

Both VITEEE and JEE Mains focus on class 11 and 12th syllabus. VITEEE, however, also covers CBSE syllabus. So, whether you are taking VITEEE or JEE, you first need to cover complete NCERT syllabus to create a strong foundation. These books help you clear the basics.

Understand the difference between exam patterns

If you are planning to appear for both the engineering entrance exams, you should carefully check and understand the exam patterns. Understand the types of questions, time, and topics covered to make your D-day strategies accordingly.

    Identify important topics

Though this will be completely wrong to say that you can crack any of these exams by just focusing on some important topics, you can still make a list of these topics. The best way to get an idea of the important topics covered in JEE and VITEEE exam is to solve previous year papers. Having knowledge of the most important section will help you work more on them to secure a top rank in the exam.

Both VITEEE and JEE are equally important entrance exams in a student’s life as these help them get admission to their dream college. Strive hard, pay attention to everything, solve as many sample tests and previous year papers as you can and trust in yourself. Make sure you choose a right online platform like Eduwhere to practice sample papers and mock tests. Solving papers just for the sake of solving is of no use until you know about your mistakes, performance and the improvement areas. Eduwhere helps you get all this with detailed analysis reports prepared by the experienced teachers.

Wish you all the best for your preparation and success in the exam!
